UMD Jazz Festival
UMD Jazz Festival

The Washburn High School Jazz Ensemble participated in the 44th annual “Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival” hosted by the University of Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday, March 18th. The Festival features a non-competitive, positive learning experience for young jazz ensembles and concludes with an outstanding concert with guest artist, saxophone soloist Ernie Watts. The jazz ensemble performed three selections during their 40 minute session and were critiqued by two outstanding clinicians. The students also attended master classes for their specific instruments or sections, observed other high school jazz ensembles and attended the finale concert with the guest artist, UMD Jazz I and the Jazz Festival All-Star Combo. This is a positive, learning oriented approach, which is the hallmark of the “Head of the Lakes” Festival. No hype, no trophies or defeats; just jazz music, hard work and fun learning for the students!
