Band and Choir in the Magic Kingdom
Band and Choir in the Magic Kingdom

On March 26, members of the Washburn High School Band and Choir flew to Orlando for four days to experience the magic and excitement of Disney World and other area attractions. The group was welcomed by the warmth and sunshine of the beautiful Florida weather. On day one, the students and adults spent the entire day at the Magic Kingdom in Disney World, riding the roller coasters and attractions, watching the parades and exploring the shops. The day culminated with the Wishes Nighttime Spectacular fireworks display and the Once Upon A Time laser projection fantasy turning Cinderella’s castle into a huge projection screen. Day two took the group to Universal Studios and The Islands of Adventure, where they explored The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the Adventures of Spiderman and the Marvel Comics, Jurassic Park and Kong’s Skull Island and, of course, more roller coasters. A number of the students had never flown in an airplane or been on a roller coaster before this trip. Day three was performance day and both the band and choir represented Washburn High School very well in performances in Disney Springs which is a main retail shopping complex for Walt Disney World and is populated by thousands of tourists. Working with the Disney Performing Arts specialists backstage in preparation for the performances is truly a unique opportunity that very few people ever have to the chance to experience. Following the performances, the students spent the rest of the day at EPCOT (Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow), exploring current and future technology and experiencing the cultures of the world as they walked around the lagoon through the World Showcase. The day ended with the amazing IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth display that combines fireworks, pyrotechnics, water and lasers and all takes place in and over the lagoon. On the final day of the trip, the group went to the Animal Kingdom and explored the wonders of nature and the wild. The Kilimanjaro Safari is a main attraction, where guests climb aboard an open-sided safari vehicle for an expedition to see African species in savanna, rivers and rocky hills. Also, we cannot forget the Expedition Everest roller coaster and the Dinosaur thrill ride. That afternoon it was time to head back to the All Star Music Resort, which was our home for the past four days, to gather our luggage and instruments and make our way to the airport for the flight home. This was a fantastic trip with the most enjoyable people. Everyone returned very tired and with experiences that will last a lifetime!
